THE Herald Sun Tour is done and dusted for 2015.
The final stage on the Mornington Peninsula was an incredible experience with so many people cheering my name all around the 122km course. Local knowledge really helped me out there, I knew where to conserve energy and where to go hard. I think I had one of my most enjoyable days on the bike.
In the end I found myself in the break with 13 guys and mixed emotions on what to do. We had some very good GC options waiting in the bunch, and I could never win a hill top stage agains the company I was keeping. But in the end it was looking like I might have to try! The first two times up the climb was crazy, people were running, my mates were scattered along the road and I was so excited the other guys had to slow me down before I rode away from the break!!
Unfortunately for the break we got caught just at the bottom of the final climb by a perfectly timed ride by the peloton. But regardless it was great fun and I'm glad I slipped up the road to enjoy the atmosphere and make other teams a little tired chasing. Congrats to Pat Bevin (Avanti Racing Team) for the win today, he has a massive future ahead!
It's been a fantastic racing around Victoria this week, John Trevorrow and his team really put together a great course. It's been a pleasure to race it with many highlights along the way.
Each day the course set up the stages for a strong break making it very fast, clean racing with very deserving stage winners each time.
Our newly constructed KordaMentha National Team really bonded well in our first week riding as a team. We managed to get 2 podiums and everyone in the team did a great job making it a true team performance.
The only World Tour team here, Orica really proved their class winning 3 out of the 5 stages over every sort of terrain and Cam Meyer taking GC.
For me it's a race that I always want to be apart of, as there is nothing better than racing on your home training ground like yesterday's stage finishing at Arthur's seat!
Next on the agenda for me will be off to Europe to meet my new British based team — NFTO.
It's been an amazing start to the season with a National Jersey, a World Tour win and solid form. Now I'm looking forward to the fresh start for 2015 with the new team, opportunities and racing a good race calendar.
Thanks for following my journey this week!
