South Sydney Rabbitohs v Canberra Raiders at ANZ Stadium

South Sydney truly deserve their favouritism tag. Following the weekend's results, the Rabbitohs are way out in front on the ladder and it is because they are a big, mobile side that make no mistakes. This is a side with sparkle over the field and a great kicking game to top it off. But on Friday for the opening 25 minutes, the Raiders did almost everything right and led by two for around 16 minutes, they had entered into a good arm wrestle. However, when the Raiders began to make some errors and their heads dropped, the Rabbitohs seized their opportunities. 16-2 at half time, the game was far from over but the Raiders' energy levels showed they had been worn down and the second half followed the theme of the first. The Raiders have been disappointing the last two weeks and with injuries to Sandor Earl (dislocated elbow) and Jack Wighton (hip flexor) it won't be any easier to turn things around although they desperately need to if they want to feature in finals football.

Wests Tigers v Melbourne Storm at Leichhardt Oval

Melbourne missed Cameron Smith and his left foot kicking game. This was the difference between these two sides. Robbie Farah's left boot was all class in a game plan which was built for wet weather football. The Tigers played patient while the Storm were frantic in attack. Cooper Cronk appeared to be overplaying his hand, making the Storm's attack look erratic at times. As a result they weren't able to build any pressure and the Tigers record against the Storm at Leichhardt lives on. It's funny to think earlier in the year, the Tigers were being booed and people were calling for Mick Potter's head and following a trip away, they have now they won four of their last five games. They are now on the fringe of the eight and reaping the rewards thanks to a handful of young guys in Tim Simona, David Nofoaluma and Sauaso Sue who were looking for an opportunity to shine in a team depleted by injury. They have great leg speed, are powerful ball runners and confident under the high ball which has made the Tigers a force to be reckoned with in recent weeks.

Penrith Panthers v St George Illawarra Dragons at Centrebet Stadium

Penrith deserve a lot more credit than they have been given. They are traveling really well and are going to continue to trouble teams. Their young fullback, Matt Moylan is a genuine football player who has a knack of appearing at the right time. He is a star and showed good sleight of hand on Saturday night. Mose Masoe created the go-forward for the Panthers and James Segeyaro asked questions of the Dragons ruck which allowed Luke Walsh to shine. Walsh's greatest strength is his kicking game and ability to steer a side around if they can get on the front foot. Unfortunately for the Dragons it's the same old story – they are unable to score points. They can defend the house down but you can't do it for 80 minutes and when pressure mounts you leak points and that has been the Dragons biggest issues since Wayne Bennett left the club. Basic errors and being unable to mount pressure in attack is a genuine concern for the club.

Newcastle Knights v Gold Coast Titans at Hunter Stadium

Is this the start of Newcastle's run into the semi-finals? The Knights hadn't played well the last six or seven weeks while the Gold Coast were travelling well. I know there was torrential rain but what happened in the opening 30 minutes? Jamal Idris got injured early in the match and the Titans failed to get into the game. Jarrod Mullen was wonderful leading the side, Darius Boyd led the kick-chase while Danny Buderus provided plenty of spark in his return from a back injury. James McManus had a field day finishing the game with four tries as the Knights preferred attacking down his edge. Willie Mason brought energy to the team in a side which is almost back to full strength. The Titans were courageous for scoring three tries at the end of the game but they will be extremely disappointed with their performance.

Warriors v Brisbane Broncos at Mt Smart Stadium

This was a wonderful game. A few weeks ago we saw the Warriors put 60 points on Brisbane and now they have gone on to win five games straight. It is amazing how Matt Elliott has turned this club around when you consider at the start of the year his head was resting on the chopping block. They are a big strong side and Shaun Johnson is beginning to show maturity in his game which has made a big impact on the side. Brisbane should hold their heads high in what was a gutsy performance. Sam Thaiday was outstanding for the visitors but a length of the field try to Konrad Hurrell was the difference. Corey Parker missing a penalty goal from 45 metres out in the 80th minute to send the game to golden point but the Broncos will go home proud of their effort.

North Queensland Cowboys v  Cronulla Sharks at 1300SMILES Stadium

The North Queensland of old returned on Sunday. While Cronulla didn't deserve the blowout score line, an inability to mount pressure cost the Sharks dearly against an impressive Cowboys side. Robert Lui and Johnathan Thurston were creative but it was controlled as they created pressure in their attack. The Cowboys stayed patient while the Sharks overplayed their hand and came up with poor kicks and poor options when on the try line. Defensively both sides were very strong but you cannot defend for 80 minutes when you continue to make mistakes and expect to survive the attacking onslaught of an NRL side. The points came late for the Cowboys in a game which saw Matt Scott and James Tamou return to form. Their left edge of Gavin Cooper and Kane Linnett worked hard while Brent Tate was outstanding on the other side of the field. This week they face Canberra but will travel to Canberra Stadium full of confidence and looking continue their new found form before losing their starts to State of Origin.

Chooks want controlled agro from JWH

The Sydney Roosters will be looking for controlled aggression from feisty prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves as he makes his NRL return from suspension on Monday against the Manly outfit he crossed the line against last outing.

Waerea-Hargreaves was sent off and banned for five weeks for hitting Sea Eagles prop George Rose with a high shot in the Roosters' 16-4 win at Brookvale last month.

He makes his return in a high-stakes clash at Allianz Stadium between the third and fourth-placed teams.

The Roosters will climb above Melbourne into second if they win, while a Manly victory will move the Sea Eagles to within one point of the Roosters.

Roosters captain and fullback Anthony Minichiello said Waerea-Hargreaves was excited about playing again, but was also aware of the potential for the Kiwi international to get too pumped up.

"You've got to speak to Jared about that because he likes to play the game tough and aggressive on a weekly basis and when he's been out for five weeks that can all build up,'' Minichiello said.

"We need some controlled aggression from him tomorrow night.''

Manly coach Geoff Toovey admitted the Roosters were a more formidable proposition with Waerea-Hargreaves in their line-up.

"He's a great leader of their forwards and I think they've missed him a little bit and he'll add something to their pack,'' Toovey said.

Toovey insisted there'd be no retribution eked out by his side, saying the Eagles were more intent on breaking down the Roosters' league-best defence than seeking payback against Waerea-Hargreaves.

"To crack the opposition defence you need to come up with something special or pray on their mistakes,'' he said.

"They did that better than us last time and hopefully we can return the favour.''

"It's a very close competition in the middle of the pack so we need to start stringing a few games together, a few wins, and hopefully clear ourselves away from that pack.''

Toovey received a boost on Sunday, with tryscoring ace Brett Stewart completing Manly captain's run to be in line for his first start since round eight.

The former Test fullback suffered a chipped bone in his back after copping a knee during Manly's six-point win over St George Illawarra and the Sea Eagles have won one of their past five games in his absence.

Stewart is no certainty to play, with Toovey waiting to see how he pulls up on Monday and the coach said Manly fans shouldn't expect miracles if he does start.

"If he's fit, he'll definitely add some experience.

"But he's been out for a long time. It's one of those injuries where he hasn't been able to participate in team activities.

"So it will take a little time for him to find his feet but there's still half a comp to go.''

With NSW five-eighth James Maloney injured in last week's State of Origin clash, Daniel Mortimer will retain a starting spot for the Roosters after an excellent display against the Bulldogs.

Greater Western Sydney have taken a step closer to an unwanted piece of AFL history with their 86-point hammering by North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The Giants have now lost all 13 matches this season, and are closing in on being the first team in AFL/VFL history since Fitzroy in 1964 to go through a season winless.

Critical to the Giants breaking their duck this season appears next Saturday's clash with fellow strugglers Western Bulldogs in Canberra.

Sheedy admitted he had not considered the prospect of the team going through their sophomore season without a win.

But he admitted the importance of the Bulldogs game had been a topic of post-match conversation after the Giants' 19.16 (130) to 6.8 (44) defeat by a dominant North in an otherwise forgettable game.

"It's an opportunity for us to try and search for our first win, and I've been speaking about that to the players,'' Sheedy said.

"I haven't thought about that (the prospect of a winless season) to be honest.

"The task you take on when you try to build this club from the real, deep foundation ... is you suffer some losses early like the Brisbane Bears did and the Swans did.''

The Giants' hopes of an upset were extinguished by the end of the first quarter - the Kangaroos piling on an eight goals to one term to set up the victory.

Drew Petrie booted five goals and Lindsay Thomas four for the Kangaroos.

GWS moved into damage limitation mode in the second term by putting players behind the ball - a tactic which worked to a degree as the sides booted four goals apiece in the quarter.

But the Kangaroos had the better of a dire second half, restricting the Giants to just one goal as the visitors continued to play extra men behind the ball for the rest of the match.

North now have a 5-8 win-loss record, keeping alive their faint chances of making this season's finals.

Coach Brad Scott admitted he was pleased with how his team had coped with the Giants' unusual defensive tactics.

"The main thing we take away from that is the opposition threw something pretty strange at us, and we were able to respond really quickly,'' Scott said.

"I called for an organised effort from our boys, and after halftime we really got that.''

North's only concern to come out of the match centres on Thomas, who faces match review panel scrutiny after what appeared a possible headbutt on Giants youngster Jacob Townsend.

North now have a 5-8 win-loss record, and will need seven wins from their remaining nine matches to have any realistic hope of reaching the finals.

Form sides Richmond, Geelong, Essendon and Hawthorn dot the Kangaroos' run home, and they remain three wins out of the top eight in 12th place.

But their percentage is best of any of the teams currently outside the eight and better than one of those inside - eighth-placed Collingwood - whom the Kangaroos will play in the final home-and-away match of the season.

"We play really good sides on the way home,'' Scott said.

"We just look at playing footy that's capable of beating them (opposing teams). And then if we get the numbers we need, then we'll get there.

"If we don't play good footy along the way, the good sides just get you.''

North take on Richmond next weekend, with the Tigers having now won four successive matches after their 64-point win over St Kilda.

Richmond killed off the match with 20 minutes of outstanding play through the second term.

The Saints kicked the first goal of the quarter to reduce the margin to two points and were pressuring Richmond with hard running and pressure.

But the Tigers then kicked six goals to two points for a 41-point lead at the main break.

The ball rarely left Richmond's half of the ground through the second quarter.

As the Tigers pressed, the Saints dropped away dramatically and lost the system that had made the first term a tight contest.

Tigers key forwards Jack Riewoldt, Vickery and Aaron Edwards all shone in the second quarter.

Riewoldt had plenty of chances to take the AFL goalkicking lead from West Coast's Josh Kennedy, but he was wasteful with 3.4 and two out of bounds.

The Tigers star now has 40 goals, one behind the Eagles spearhead.

Midfielder David Armitage was best for the disappointing Saints with 25 possessions.

Bombers players used as guinea pigs

Human guinea pigs ... fresh allegations hit Windy Hill. Source: Joe Castro / AAP

Essendon admit they won't know the full extent of what happened at the AFL club during their controversial supplements program until ASADA's anti-doping investigation is completed.

The Bombers say it would be deeply distressing and disturbing if shocking allegations that their players were used as guinea pigs for the banned substance AOD-9604 were found to be correct.

Fairfax Media reported on Sunday that ASADA is investigating whether Bombers players were involved in a virtual clinical trial of the substance, which is not approved for human use.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

It says ASADA is probing if some players were put on the anti-obesity drug and their performance measured against players who weren't using it, with results then passed on to external parties.

While the Bombers said they had no knowledge of any clinical trial at the club, they also admitted they wouldn't know the full picture of what had happened at Essendon until after the investigation.

"The club has no knowledge of any clinical trial and, if this is found to be true, it is deeply distressing and disturbing, and goes to the heart of what may have been perpetrated at our club,'' Essendon said in a statement.

"We have been limited in what we can comment on and, more than anything else, we want the ASADA investigation to be completed.

"There is information we still do not have as a club and we are looking to the ASADA investigation to uncover the full extent of what happened at the club.''

The club's internal investigation into governance has already described what was going at the Bombers in 2012 as a "pharmacologically experimental environment never adequately controlled or challenged''.

Essendon skipper Jobe Watson admits he believes he was administered AOD-9604 last year, saying it was cleared for his use by club medical staff.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has confirmed the substance has been banned for athletes since 2011 under a catch-all in which substances not approved for human use are prohibited.

Fairfax said players including Watson were given the substance at a volume and frequency far exceeding that of clinical trials.

It quoted a source familiar with the ASADA inquiry who said: "WADA were shocked by some of the substances going around Essendon and some of the NRL clubs.

"Some of those drugs had not been thought of in a sporting context before.

"We've got a playing generation of guinea pigs.''

The AFL broke its silence on the issue on Sunday to say little except it believed the investigation would be concluded by August.

"Out of respect for the ongoing ASADA-AFL investigation, the AFL will not comment on claims and speculation related to the case,'' AFL deputy chief executive officer Gillon McLachlan said.

"We understand the intense interest in the matter, but the integrity of the process must be respected.

"Although frustrating, I urge everyone to remain patient and to allow the investigators to do their work and to reach their conclusions based on all the evidence available.

"We share everyone's desire to have the ASADA inquiries completed as soon as possible to provide clarity around a range of issues for the Essendon Football Club, its players and the wider competition.

"We remain committed to this happening in August.''

Linnett received an offload from back-rower Tariq Sims and had to beat three defenders to put the ball on the line.

Luke Lewis evened the score for the visitors after taking a Todd Carney pass with a well-timed run to cross for a try as the teams went into halftime at 4-4.

Gavin Cooper restored the Cowboys' lead five minutes after the re-start and the teams were unable to breach each other's defence for the next 25 minutes.

Thurston was the difference in the final 10 minutes, laying on tries for Linnett and Antonio Winterstein while kicking a penalty goal to put his side up to 13th on the NRL ladder.

North Queensland prop Ashton Sims might have a date with the judiciary this week after being put on report for a 23rd-minute knee to the head of Sharks fullback Nathan Stapleton.

North Queensland's under-pressure coach Neil Henry said his side come out of the half-time break looking for a lift in intensity and the players responded.

"Obviously the second half was good, we had a fair bit of possession there and got some nice tries," Henry said.

"(It was a) tough game really, I thought the first 60 minutes had a bit of end-to-end stuff there at times but I'm very pleased with our defensive effort as well to only concede four points."

Henry added that the win, the Cowboys' 100th in Townsville and following their last-start victory over St George-Illawarra, had come at a perfect time for a side hit hard by a busy State of Origin period.

Sharks coach Shane Flanagan said his team had simply given up too much of the ball in the second half and that defensive workload hurt them in the final quarter.

"We had 13 errors with the ball and you just can't do it and the Cowboys capitalised," Flanagan said.

"We had probably six or seven drop-outs in that time and it took too much petrol out of them and some poor execution and it wasn't our night.

"We weren't very good at all."

Gold Coast centre Jamal Idris is likely to miss the remainder of the NRL season after suffering a broken fibula in his side's loss to Newcastle on Sunday.

On the same day reports emerged the manager of Wests Tigers icon Benji Marshall met John Kirwan - the coach of the Auckland-based Super Rugby club the Blues - about a potential move, Idris's dreams of a State of Origin recall for the series decider were demolished.

Idris came off in the fifth minute of his side's 46-16 thrashing in Newcastle after falling awkwardly in a tackle and was immediately sent to hospital for scans.

"They were worried about a break. I don't think it's minor, put it that way,'' Gold Coast coach John Cartwright said.

Cartwright's hunch was right. Idris tweeted the results of his scans: "Broken fibula, dislocated ankle and snapped a ligament."

"I spoke to him at halftime. He was very despondent - he doesn't like missing football. I think he knows it could be something that might keep him on the sideline for a little while," Cartwright added.

Mark Webber finished just short of a remarkable and dramatic victory at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, German driver Nico Rosberg just holding out the retiring Australian.

Rosberg came home just seven-tenths of a second clear of Red Bull's Webber in a tumultuous event.

It was the Mercedes team's first victory in Britain since Stirling Moss won at Aintree in 1955 and Rosberg's second in three races and third of his career.

But the race was overshadowed by a dangerous spate of Pirelli tyre failures, including one that blew home hero Briton Lewis Hamilton's hopes of a home win in the other Mercedes car as he led from pole position.

In all, four drivers were hit by tyre blowouts while championship leading defending triple world champion German Sebastian Vettel was forced to retire his Red Bull for the first time this year after inheriting the lead.

Hamilton's tyre explosion was followed by others for Brazilian Felipe Massa of Ferrari, Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne of Toro Rosso and Mexican Sergio Perez of McLaren in a contest that saw two Safety Car interventions.

Webber, who fell to 15th on the opening lap, fought back to finish second in his first race since announcing he was quitting Formula One at the end of the season ahead of two-time champion German Fernando Alonso in the second Ferrari and Hamilton, who stormed from the back to finish fourth despite his tyre failure.

Alonso closed the gap in the overall standings on Vettel, who has 132 points while the Spaniard is on 111 after eight races with the next race the German Grand Prix next Sunday.

Kimi Raikkonen, the 2007 champion, finished fifth for Lotus ahead of Massa, German Adrian Sutil of Force India and rising hope Australian Daniel Ricciardo of Toro Rosso.

Briton Paul Di Resta of Force India finished ninth and German Nico Hulkenberg 10th for Sauber on an amazing day in rare British sunshine.
