How Spain inspired Victory's re-birth

Marcos Flores, Cesc Fabregas and David Silva. Playing a game of odd one out? No, we're asking: what do these three have in common?

The answer lies in Ange Postecoglou's transformation of Melbourne Victory this year and the decision to play with a 'false No.9' – a position made fashionable during Spain's Euro 2012 triumph during the off-season.

The two-time grand final winner has answered those who wondered if he could bring his Midas touch to Melbourne – but in excavating the Victory from the Mehmet Durakovic-Harry Kewell-Jim Magilton circus to a slick, entertaining outfit, he has shown he is not a one-trick pony, either.

Postecoglou told foxsports.com.au that Spain's Euro 2012 success was the impetus for him to thrust the Argentine into a role we haven't really yet seen in the A-League – and revealed it was a role that he originally envisioned for Harry Kewell.

"It was something I toyed with doing at Brisbane but didn't have the players there to be able to do it that way," Postecoglou said.

"When I got to Victory it was something I thought I'd try – if you've got the right type of players, it can be hard to stop and has endless possibilities.

"Most teams play with a central striker and that limits certain things you can do. This releases that area and allows more people to come through.

"So, watching Spain at the Euros, and the way they went about it, certainly gave us something to think about.

"That was the way I wanted to play and I had a look at the players I had available. To be honest, I had a look at the players I had here and I thought Harry Kewell would be back and it was the kind of role I thought Harry could play really well."

MARCOS FLORES

In building a team with a lethal front three, Postecoglou hailed Flores's ability to play to a new structure – something that has also helped Marco Rojas and Archie Thompson form part of a lightning attacking trio.

"It's a different role to what Marcos is used to - and he's working hard to make it effective.

"Sometimes it means he won't get as many highlight reels as he did at Adelaide but he just wants to be successful. It's the No.1 thing he said to me – he wanted to be a champion.

"To do that you've got to fit into the structure of a team and he's growing into that role and you've seen in the last few weeks he's growing into now."

Flores has been the fulcrum in between two players enjoying stellar seasons.

MARCO ROJAS

Marco Rojas, reportedly attracting interest from clubs like Juventus and Liverpool recently, has been a revelation, returning to the player who burst onto the scene at Wellington Phoenix.

Postecoglou wanted him for the Roar, but couldn't wait to use him at Victory once he took on the job.

But what's changed from last year to this year?

"I didn't have to say anything specific to him; he knew he had to work hard this year. And he has from day one. He understands his role in the team and that's probably helped him," Postecoglou explained.

"He had a tough year last year, because the whole Melbourne Victory side struggled. But I knew he was someone I could work with.

"The style of game we play would suit him, we're set up for a player like him to do what he does – he's grown from there, he's got a lot of confidence from that, he had a good pre-season with us. And now he's scoring goals, feeling good about how the team's playing and that's coming out as a result."

ARCHIE THOMPSON

The final member of Postecoglou's dynamic trio is the effervescent Archie Thompson.

Holger Osieck can't get enough of the ageless striker – and Postecoglou explains why, adding this is as good an opportunity as ever for Thompson to star for the national team.

"I think the fact the World Cup is in touching distance is a great motivator for him," he said.

"He works really hard at training. I never talk about his age because of what I see, how hard he works at training.

"He's one of the players I really look forward to working with. We've changed his role to what he was probably used to. He's embraced it.

"He realises he's there to work with the other strikers and I think he's heading into his best form at the right time.

"He's not just scoring goals, but he's set up a number for Marco this year and he's always threatening going forward. "

On Sunday Shootout, Postecoglou hailed his entire squad for embracing the challenge he set for them when he arrived.

Fox Sports football expert Mark Bosnich admits he feared Postecoglou might have been "trying too much too soon" with players he might be "asking to go a step too far".

But Postecoglou says that "bravery is in the execution".

And Victory are a new entity – not just on the pitch, but off it, as a result.

"We had to change the culture: not because what was there was wrong, but because I like to work a certain way.

"Certainly, we've expanded the football department. I brought in people who had the mindset and culture to put it in place, who I've worked with before. Obviously there's also Kevin Muscat, Steve Mautone, who've been at the club for a while as well.

"We've built a really strong football department. It's where it all starts. It's about having a total football philosophy around it.

"We've changed things radically from what they were last year - because it wasn't successful, but also because of how I want to work.

"That's an evolving process, we'll keep trying to improve on and off the field because I think the possibility to improve are endless."

Aldo wins, Overeem KO'd at UFC 156

Champion ... Jose Aldo defends his Featherweight belt against Frankie Edgar. Source: Eric Jamison / AAP

The disappointment that was the match between Rashad Evans and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira is exactly what was needed prior to the fierce showdown that was Aldo vs. Edgar.

Don't confuse this. Ideally all of the fights at UFC 156 would have been outstanding. However, having a letdown (a unanimous decision won by "Little Nog") just before the UFC Featherweight Title bout made the ensuing 25 minutes of headlining action that much more sweet.

Frankie Edgar is the modern day "Rocky". The New Jersey native easily had all of the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Vegas in his corner, but Jose Aldo was just too strong, retaining his belt by unanimous decision.

For the opening three rounds, all went according to Aldo's plan. The Brazilian unleashed devastating leg kicks, bruising Edgar's thigh early and often. Edgar's speed, which was a bigger advantage to him in the 155-pound division, was matched by Aldo, who picked apart the defense of "The Answer" landing jabs at will. Edgar's toughness shined bright as he battled through the first 15 minutes despite being stuffed on the majority of his takedown attempts.

Then the tide shifted.

Edgar, whose gas tank knows no bounds, kept dancing around the ring despite the early damage. Aldo began to slow. Edgar gritted his teeth and began to land the combinations and takedowns that eluded him, finally pressuring the champion. Breathing heavily through his mouthpiece, the champ's demeanor changed. The smile that was on Aldo's face during the first three rounds morphed into something much more serious. In the final 10 minutes, Aldo threw flashy kicks and flying knees in an attempt to steal the later rounds, but frequently missed his mark.

In the end, Edgar's late onslaught was not enough and the judges ruled against him, 49-46, 49-46, 48-47. Yet no one will begrudge him the merits of a hard-fought battle. Especially when that battle was awarded the bonus for Fight of the Night.

In other action, the return of Alistair Overeem was met with mixed reviews. Some were excited to see such a presence return to the heavyweight division of the UFC. Others were thrilled to see Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva knock Overeem out. In a finish that no one saw coming, Silva was easily behind two rounds to none heading into the third. Seconds into round three, Silva caught Overeem off guard and absolutely unloaded. Overeem, the former Strikeforce champion, fell to the canvas like a mighty oak as the victim of the Knockout of the Night. Silva took a moment to hulk over him and demanded respect before being pulled away by referee Herb Dean. In less than 30 seconds, Antonio Silva turned the UFC heavyweight division into what might officially be the hardest algebra equation in MMA.

In what could be called the "Dave Herman" special, submission specialist Demian Maia (6 of 11 UFC wins via submission) faced the best jiu jitsu defense the UFC has to offer in Jon Fitch. Maia initiated the submission attack early, mounting a still-standing Fitch within the opening seconds. Maia continued to apply the submission pressure throughout the first round. And in fitting fashion for a fight on Groundhog Day, Maia did the same in rounds two and three. The fact that Fitch was not forced to tap is amazing, but not even close to being worthy of an Octagon win.

Note: Jiu Jitsu works. Still.

And in the pay-per-view opener, Joseph Benavidez helped prove why the flyweights are a division to watch in the UFC. Some may criticize the division for a lack of power and ferocity, but anyone who watched this fight would have to disagree. Benavidez brutalized McCall's thigh, face and anything else he could swing a fist or kick at, while McCall leveled dozens of hammer fists on Benavidez when the fight hit the ground. The activity level in the fight was high and after Benavidez's unanimous-decision victory, the Team Alpha Male phenom should be on everyone's radar for a title shot.

Star performers ... Melbourne Victory have quality at both ends of the pitch. Source: Gregg Porteous / News Limited

Ange Postecoglou knows what he wants out of his team, and after a shaky opening couple of weeks, he found one of the cogs missing in his re-built Victory.

Nathan Coe.

Lawrence Thomas and Tando Velaphi came and went within weeks, as Postecoglou hand-picked a player he knew from Australia's youth teams earlier in the decade - a player he thought he needed so his new side could play the style of play he demanded.

8 Sydney 19 6 3 10 -9 21
9 Wellington 19 5 5 9 -10 20
10 Perth 19 5 4 10 -2 19

"I've known Coey for a long time. He was an outfield player until his teens, so I know he was good with his feet and could adapt to how I wanted a keeper to play in our system," Postecoglou told foxsports.com.au.

"It's taken him a while – more for his goalkeeping than anything else. He didn't have a pre-season and came to us after the season started.

"So it's taken him a little while for us to see the best of him, but he's coming into form at a good time for us.

"He's a really good guy to have around the club. He's popular with his teammates.

"He comes to us with the right intentions. He wants to be successful and he's showing that on the field now."

Nathan Coe v Andrew Redmayne isn't normally the duel you'd go to the Melbourne derby to see, but these two shot-stoppers created a highlights reel of their own during the pulsating clash at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

Redmayne continued his outstanding form, picking up an Alex Tobin point. But he couldn't pick up back-to-back Save of the Week awards.

This week, the nod goes to Coe, who pulled off a number of stunning saves, with his top-corner leap off Gol Gol Mebrahtu's free-kick earning him Mark Bosnich's vote this week.

"This save was absolutely outstanding," Bozza said on Sunday Shootout.

"He brought out a point blank save reminiscent of Gordon Banks earlier … and this save is the hardest save to make except for the bottom corner."

Bailey, Starc lead Aussies to victory

Hundred ... Bailey hit a superb 125 off 110 balls. Source: Stefan Gosatti / AAP

George Bailey answered his critics in dominant fashion and Mitchell Starc again wreaked havoc with the ball as Australia posted a 54-run victory over West Indies in the second one-day international at the WACA Ground.

2nd ODI - WACA Ground

3 February 2013 - Day 1, Session 2

West Indies 1st Innings

J. Holder 9 28 1 0 32.14
K. Roach 0 0 0 0 0
G. Maxwell 8.1 1 63 4 7.71

After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, Australia were in deep trouble at 6-98 in the 24th over before Bailey cracked an unbeaten 125 off 110 balls to lift the home side to 7-266.

In reply, the West Indies were dismissed for 212 in 38.1 overs, with Mitchell Starc following up Friday's 5-20 with 5-32 in front of 11,121 fans.

Game three of the five-match series will be played at Manuka Oval on Wednesday, with Australia holding a 2-0 lead.

West Indies, who were skittled for 70 in the series opener, looked set for another painful outing after crashing to 3-33 on Sunday.

Starc was the chief destroyer early on with the wickets of Chris Gayle (four), Ramnaresh Sarwan (0) and Darren Bravo (14), but opener Kieran Powell (83 off 90 balls) and Dwayne Bravo (45) swung the game the visitors' way with a quick-fire 126-run stand.

At 3-159 in the 28th over, the Windies were well placed for victory.

Relive the action with our Cricket Match Centre, featuring FoxTracker.

But that was before another devastating spell from Starc, who snared the wickets of Powell and Devon Thomas (0) in consecutive balls as the West Indies lost 4-9 to hand all the momentum to Australia.

The Windies seemed unlucky to lose Thomas under the Decision Review System, with hot spot not showing any clear-cut evidence that he had nicked the ball behind.

Although Starc was again the hero with the ball, Australia had Bailey to thank for setting up the win.

National selectors had come under heavy criticism from some quarters for selecting Bailey as Australia's Twenty20 captain and also including him in the 50-over set-up.

But his returns have justified his positions. After 20 ODIs, Bailey is averaging 45 at a strike rate of 81.2, while he has averaged 28.8 at a strike rate of 132 from 15 T20Is.

All-rounder Glenn Maxwell experienced a day of mixed fortunes.

The 24-year-old made a first-ball duck, before finding out he had been auctioned off to Indian Premier League side Mumbai Indians for a cool $US1 million.

Maxwell then claimed crucial wickets while copping a battering with the ball, finishing with 4-63 off 8.1 overs.

On a day when the temperature reached 37.8C, the West Indies were hot in the field early as they pulled in three absolute screamers.

Powell started the show with a magnificent diving catch to his right to dismiss Usman Khawaja for three, before Darren Bravo snared a reflex catch above his head to remove Aaron Finch for 11.

But Darren Sammy produced arguably the best of the lot while fielding at first slip, the skipper sticking up his left hand to pull in an edge from Matthew Wade.

"I was a bit more emotional than I thought I would be. It was a great feeling," Bailey said of notching his maiden ODI century.

"I wasn't very happy with my innings early.

"I was joking with (coach) Mickey Arthur that I only got my feet going at about the 48th over. That was a bit of a battle."

Powell said the West Indies took plenty of positives out of the match, despite not winning.

"I thought Bailey and (James) Faulkner batted really well," Powell said.

"They didn't really give us an opportunity to get into the tail.

"You have to give them credit for the way they played."

Beautiful ... Besart Berisha scored a ripper against the Mariners. Source: Dave Hunt / AAP

It's the goal to warm the hearts of all Brisbane Roar fans.

Entrants must be 18 or over and hold a current full Australian driver's licence.

The competition commences on, 27 January 2013 at 8:30pm AEDT and closes on 5 April 2013 at 5:00pm AEDT and is divided into 10 weekly periods.

Each weekly period opens on Sunday at 8:30pm AEDT and closes on the following Friday at 5:00pm AEDT.

One entry per weekly entry period.

This competition is authorised under NSW Permit No. LTPS/13/00440, ACT TP13/00141, Victorian Permit No. 13/117 & SA Licence No. T13/61.

Shane Steffanuto steaming down the left flank, getting in behind, before squaring a picture perfect ball for Besart Berisha to turn home.

Signs of the free-flowing, adventurous football that made the Roar famous in recent seasons.

While that tempo, and consistency, has been sorely lacking so far this season, Friday night's 2-2 draw has the side back in the top-six. A dark horse, perhaps?

In even better news for Mike Mulvey's side, the killer ball to play Steffanuto in behind the Mariners backline was played by new recruit Stefan Nijland.

Check out the goal in the video selection at the top of the page, which also features two pearlers from the Melbourne derby.

David Williams was in electric form at Etihad Stadium and he rifled home a brilliant finish to deliver a late scare for the Victory; the third choice is the sublime Archie Thompson strike that opened the scoring in the same game.

How the Aussies fared in IPL auction

Pay day ... Kane Richardson was snapped up for a whopping $US700,000 Source: James Elsby / AAP

Glenn Maxwell is set for a big pay day thanks to the Indian Premier League auction, but he's not the only Australian in that category.

Here's a list of all the Australians who were up for auction in Chennai on Sunday, and how they fared.

SOLD
