JOEL Parkinson has tested out new vision and a revamped gym routine and come up with a victory in his first competition of the year.

Out of the gym and in the water for the first time since eye surgery to improve his distance sight, Parkinson was part of the Snapper Rocks team which won the two-day Australian board riders battle at Cronulla beach.

The former world champion, who has been doing surf specific training at the Australian high performance centre, described surfing at the event as both enjoyable and nerve-wracking.

"It's like surfing with your family and friends, so you feel each others' pain and losses," he said.

The Snapper Rocks team of Parkinson, Mitch Crews, Mitch Parkinson, Reef Doig, Holly-Daze Coffey Sheldon Simkus, Quinn Bruce and Jay Phillips defended its title at the event despite world champion Stephanie Gilmore opting not to compete for her club as she did last year.

Parkinson, targeting the newly named world surf league crown this season, was using the event as preparation for the opening round of the newly named world surf league, the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper Rocks in March.

In other news, surfer Tyler Wright will undergo an MRI scan on her back after being crushed against a concrete ocean pool wall at Cronulla following a competition wipeout at the event on Saturday.

Wright was yesterday absent from the competition site, recovering from the frightening accident on Saturday which saw her swept against the wall and pool chain by waves.

"I'm feeling pretty beat up. A bad lapse in judgement from myself and not the best situation to end up in,'' Wright said yesterday.

Battered and bruised from the incident, Wright will undergo further scans on her back on Tuesday to ensure there are no lingering effects from the accident.

"There's no nerve or bone damage, so that's positive news,'' Wright said.

" I'll have an MRI Tuesday and all going well I will be back training and getting ready for the World Tour year ahead.''
