AMERICAN Coco Ho has tipped Steph Gilmore and Carissa Moore as the women to beat as the top female surfers in the world prepare for their first major event of the year.
Ho, the daughter of professional surfer Michael and niece of Hawaiian former world champion Derek, is in Sydney to compete at this week's Australian Open of Surfing at Manly.
The women's field for the event boasts the likes of world champion Gilmore, former champion Moore and fellow top five ranked surfers Tyler Wright, Sally Fitzgibbons and Hawaiian Malia Manuel.
"When it comes to the ones to beat it's always Steph and Carissa,'' said Ho ahead of the nine-event World Surf League (WSL) which kicks off with the Roxy Pro Gold Coast at the end of the month.
Hawaiian Moore, the world champion in 2013 and 2011, is the only woman to have beaten six-time titleholder Gilmore for the world title on the women's tour.
Ho believes the traditional rivalry between Australian and Hawaii surfers will continue this year with Australians currently filling three of the top five places on the rankings in the wake of a memorable 2014.
"It's a friendly rivalry but it really fires us up,'' Ho said yesterday.
While the Australian open is not party of the world surf league, the event is a way for surfers to check out their rivals ahead of the WSL opener.
"It's just great to pull on the jersey and get back into it,'' said Ho.
"You definitely get to see who has been training and who is good to go.''
When the men's competition at the Australian Open begins this week world No. 2 Mick Fanning will face off against the likes of top American talent Kolohe Andino and rising Australian star Mickey Wright.
